Description IZARTEGI

This project consists in the creation of a textile façade for the construction of the new office building Izartegi in the Technopole d'Izarbel in Bidart (in the French Basque Country).

The textile membrane is the final covering of the main façade of the building and presents multiple breaks to mark planes at different inclinations as defined by the architect. It has been made out of Frontside View 381 membrane by Serge Ferrari in white, with a mesh structure that allows the passage of natural light into the offices. 8 openings are integrated into the façade as windows, allowing the users of the building to look out from two walkways which traverse the whole façade from the inside.

This configuration covers a total space of 256 m².

Technical Base

The textile façade has been created with Frontside View 381 membrane by Serge Ferrari, composed of polyester coated with PVC.

To avoid creating joints between the 4 main lengths of the façade, the decision was taken to make the almost 50 m textile façade out of a single piece. To do so, more than 160 different canvas patterns were cut and welded at high frequency in the workshop. The single-piece membrane also incorporates the trims around the perimeter and around the 8 openings which fold inwards to give a continuous appearance to the whole façade.

The canvas has been fixed to the metal support structure with double cordoning, composed of elastic rubber with a diameter of 8 mm and stainless steel cable with a diameter of 4 mm. This cordoning runs around the whole perimeter, around the 4 sides of each of the 8 openings, and along a series of interior diagonals.
